HEALTH CLEARANCES

When looking for a puppy to add to your home and family, health along with temperament are major considerations.

All responsible breeders, ensure that the dogs they choose for breeding have been tested for know health problems of that breed.  The Standard Schnauzer has few health issues associated with the breed.

There are 3 health issues that are genetic in nature known to the breed.

1.  Hip Dysplasia: this is when the hip ball does not fit into the hip socket.  It is a problem in many large breeds and as a dog ages it becomes painful and limits mobility.  Poor nutrition is also thought to be a contributing factor.

2.  Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM):  this is an inherited disease where the dog that is affected dies at a young age from an enlarged heat.  Within the past 6 months, the Standard Schnauzers, have a DNA test to tell if a dog is a carrier.  Breeding 2 carriers may cause the puppies to be born affected with DCM.

3. Epilepsy: This is rare in Standard Schnauzers but it does exist.  Currently there is no DNA test for Epilepsy.  Breeders who know of puppies born of their line that develop Epilepsy must stop breeding that line.

Both the Dam and Sire of  Arbor's A Litter have had the necessary testing.  Both dogs have a  GOOD rating on their Hip E-xays (see Liz's certificate below).   And both have tested NORMAL in their DCM DNA test.  (see Liz's Chic Report Below)  Finally there has not been Epilepsy reported in their lines.

I have also listed Liz's AKC registration.  Feel free to go to the OFA website and research both Liz and Otto.  If you are considering puppies from another litter - you can do research on them as well.
